Tutorial lacking

I'm very disappointed with the Tutorial. It tells you what you need to do, but not HOW or WHY.  I can't believe I'm totally stuck and I've only played maybe 5-10 minutes. I've been searching for answers but can't find them anywhere. "Build a Water Pump" - but it won't let me put one anywhere. Nothing looks like water (it's all green). I wouldn't be playing a tutorial version if the I knew what I was supposed to be doing and how, but I still am getting very little guidance. It's very frustrating.

Build water pumps on the edge of water. The 2x2 section of the pump with the entrance needs to be on land/platforms, while the 1x1 piece that comes off it goes into the water (or where water will be).

Note, too, when you have one of the build menus open, water is made translucent and, depending on your camera angle, can be harder to see.

It would be great to have some better explanation on the trading posts too. It took forever for me to realize they needed to be connected by a road, with a gate.
